Shelter access

If you are between 12 and 17 looking for a safe place to go you may access the shelter in one of two ways:

Self-referral: intake occurs daily from 6-9pm. You are not required to call first however if you are able to we appreciate it!

Agency referral: referred intakes are accepted 24 hours/day. The agency may include CFSA, RCMP, John Howard Society, Alberta Health Services or any other social agency you are working with.

When you arrive, a search of your belongings is conducted to ensure you are not carrying any form of contraband or illegal items. This is for the safety of everyone in the shelter. A Youth Support Worker will review the shelter guidelines with you and complete the intake. The focus then becomes determining what needs to happen to change your current situation - this is done through an Action Plan that you may complete on your own or with a Worker.

Length of stay will vary slightly depending on the situation that has brought you in. Our goal is to work with you on finding a solution - this may include mediating with your family or if this is not a possibility, we will connect you with the agency that will best help with your needs. Sunrise House is not the permanent solution, but instead a first step in finding one.
